Reading level: 3.4
4 out of 5 stars

Crankenstein is back in a Valentine’s Day edition! The illustrations, by Dan Santat, are so wonderful! Santat is my favorite illustrator and I love the cute characters he creates. Crankenstein hates all things associated with Valentine’s Day — heart-shaped napkins and sandwiches, hearts on his underwear, chocolate boxes, and making Valentine cards. As you read the story, another green character appears in the illustrations, and you get the sense that Crankenstein might have a compatriot in his hatred of all things mushy and gushy.

I really connect with the face Crankenstein makes when he bites into “the chocolate with surprise hairy coconut inside.” Hairy coconut chocolates are some of my least favorite!! This would make an excellent read-aloud for younger children.
