Kevin Henkes is a master and in Waiting he has crafted a quiet and peaceful story about a child’s toys sitting on the window sill. They don’t have any wild adventures, but in waiting for their turn to leave the window and play with their child, they notice beauty in the world. They also share an easy friendship that welcomes others.

This book is best for pre-K and kindergarten age readers and would make a wonderful bedtime story. The illustrations are cute, and the colors are peaceful. The text is simple and pairs well with the simple style of the illustrations. The book is slightly larger in size, and the paper is thick and high quality, to round out another exceptional Kevin Henkes book.

I would keep this one in mind when Caldecott time comes around in January.
