First Grade Dropout is a perfect book to read at the beginning of a school year, or for a lesson on empathy. The young boy telling the story has done something unthinkably embarrassing and been laughed at by all his classmates. The humiliation is so great that he is determined to drop out of school…a plan that hasn’t been approved by his parents yet. So maybe he can invent a time machine…

This book delivers a message about dealing with embarrassing situations, but it does so in a very funny package. Matthew Cordell’s illustrations are whimsical and do a wonderful job showing the boy’s embarrassment.
