Book review: The 5th Wave; 5 out of 5 stars #bookaday

The 5th Wave book coverby Rick Yancey
Young adult novel
5 out of 5 stars

This is a gripping sci-fi novel that has plenty of action and well-developed characters. Focusing primarily on 17-year-old Cassie, readers learn how an alien ship came to earth, and is working to destroy the human population. Cassie is a strong female protagonist, but with the backdrop of war and violence, we watch her struggle to maintain her humanity while fighting to stay alive. I had a hard time putting this book down because I was so invested in the outcome of the Cassie, Evan, Ben, Ringer, Sam, and others.

The 5th Wave really offers a lot in the way of connections between different characters, so it is more than another dystopian survival story. Themes of friendship, family, and love play out and give this story its strength. This is the first book in a trilogy that is geared toward middle and high school age readers.
