You will either love this book and probably snort while laughing until your sides hurt, or you will find it completely raunchy and wonder how on earth it ever got published. I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about it…
As an adult, I thought the cunning of the bored little sheep was brilliant and very funny, and a lot of kids will find it absolutely hilarious that Little Baa Baa is able to convince anyone to eat a “smarty tablet,” which is really just a nugget of poo. And right there is the problem. Because while adults will find it funny, they will also feel the need to point out all the wrong that Little Baa Baa is doing. He is lying and being mean to Quirky Turkey, and those are not actually traits that we want to glorify to children.
In a school setting, picture books are often used to help children make sense of feelings and ways to help and serve others. Baa Baa Smart Sheep is the antithesis of those stories.
