Using a limited color palette, Elanna Allen has created an adorable little hero out of a yellow fish who wears large round glasses. Curving lines create a sense of movement as the little fish encounters a much larger octopus.

Octopus enjoys making up silly games that he can “play” with the little fish, such as “Fishketball” or “Catch of the Day.” Readers can sense that even though the games are silly, there is something sinister and unwelcome about octopus playing with the little fish. Readers will hold their breath when octopus declares “I bet you even taste cute!” Beware, though! Sometimes surprises come in small cute packages, and our little yellow hero has something big in store.

The surprise element of Poor Little Guy reminds me a lot of a Jon Klassen story, like This is Not My Hat or I Want My Hat Back. Children and adults will still delight in the unexpected turn of events, even if you begin to guess our tiny hero’s secret.

The end papers inside both the front and back covers are story spoilers, so save them to read until the end. They are perfect though, so don’t miss them!
